How to Plan a Family Reunion in Tuscany

A family reunion trip to Tuscany is a great way to catch up with relatives, in a beautiful location, with great weather. Since we’re talking extended relatives here, chances are you’ll be with a group of minimum ten people, if not much more. Here are some tips to plan for a great trip that keeps everyone happy.

Rent a Vacation Villa

In the case of a family reunion, you’ll definitely want to skip the hotels in favor of a rented vacation home. Luckily Tuscany features countless stunning homes. Luxury accommodations in Tuscany include multi bedroom homes, with private pools, full kitchens and breathtaking views. If you’re traveling with a large group, a vacation home is a good choice because you’ll usually end up spending less than you would if you paid for several hotel rooms, and also because it allows for everyone to be under one roof.

If you enjoy the comforts offered by hotels such as being cooked for and housekeeping, don’t fret, because these services can also be hired (at an extra cost) for your personal use inside the villa. I definitely recommend hiring a chef, since cooking for a large group on your own can be a rather daunting task.

Talk dates far in advanced

One of the difficulties inherent to traveling with a large group is that everyone has all kinds of plans and responsibilities. It can be hard to find dates that work with everyone’s schedules. The best way to deal with this is by talking dates far in advanced of the season you wish to travel in. Once you’ve determined travel dates for everyone its time to get booking.

Group discounts

Since you’re traveling with a large group, you may want to look into group discount pricing for various parts of your trip. For example, if you and your relatives are all departing from the same airport, then you may be able to speak to some airlines and see if they’ll offer you a competitive price for group booking. If you take this route, make sure you call the airline far in advanced of your chosen travel dates.

This method also works if you choose to go on a tour (for example a bike tour of Florence city), calling the tour companies in advanced and asking for group rates and making reservations will probably get you a better price. Not only is this a good way to score a deal, it also ensures the rental agency will have enough bikes available on the day of your visit.

Perhaps you’re planning a nice dinner out for your final night in Tuscany? Making reservations is definitely important whenever you plan to visit a restaurant with a large group, but if you’re on a budget, it’s a great idea to call several weeks in advanced to see if you can book a set menu at a good price for you and your family members to enjoy. Many restaurants will cater to large groups by creating a custom menu.

Book a photographer

An extended family trip abroad is a once in a lifetime event for many people, and a great way to remember the trip, is by hiring a photographer to take some shots of the family. Tuscany has no shortage of beautiful backdrops, and the photos will be a treasure for years to come.

Visit sights, but don’t over-plan

Traveling with a large group means everything takes longer. Maybe granddad will loose his glasses just as the taxi arrives, or a younger cousin will be napping when you hoped to leave the house… So definitely plan to see some of the beautiful sights Tuscany has to offer, but don’t overbook your trip with a strictly planned tourism agenda. Try to take some time to sit by the pool with your loved ones (perhaps with some Italian wine in hand) and relish in the moment.

Here are a few Tuscan landmarks that are worth taking the time to visit:

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is famous worldwide, and this ornate 14th century tower tilts curiously to the side, making it a fun place to take goofy pictures.

The Florence Cathedral is truly breathtaking, with its architecture dating back to the medieval times. The iconic red dome is even more impressive in person than in pictures so it is definitely worth seeing with your own eyes!

The Uffizi Gallery is located in central Florence and features beautiful renaissance art pieces. Admittedly, this museum may be a bit boring for the youngest members of the family, but it truly is magnificent if you’re looking to explore some of the worlds most impressive Renaissance era masterpieces.

Enjoy your time with your family in this gorgeous Italian region. It’s a trip you won’t soon forget!
